The real thing?  Bolivia to produce Coca Colla

In 2010, a factory in Cochabamba Bolivia will start producing an energy drink made from coca leaves that will go by the name “Coca Colla” (a play on words, as indigenous Bolivians are sometimes known as Collas or Kollas that comes from the pre-Colombian Colla people of the Antiplano region, esp around lake Titicaca). No packshot yet, but apparently it’s going to be dark coloured, sweet and fizzy. Remind you of anything? Find out more in Spanish language links here, here and here.

Last time in there…the priest asked me what the hell am I doing with a tin foil hat on?

Irish goes to confessional

The Tent’s well known Irishman goes into the confessional box after years of being away from the Church.

There’s a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap.
On the other wall is a dazzling array of the finest cigars and chocolates.

Then the priest comes in.

“Father, forgive me, for it’s been a very long time since I’ve been to confession, but I must first admit that the Confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be.”

The priest replies:

“Get out. You’re on my side.”

Two chances - SLIM and NONE - and SLIM left town!

I’ve seen several articles about the ties that people with WHO have to the big companies but I expect it will try out the same as the banks - they make alot of money and we get the shaft.

This is an interesting trend

Ethiopian Farms Lure Investor Funds as Workers Live in Poverty

Dec. 31 (Bloomberg) — Until last year, people in the Ethiopian settlement of Elliah earned a living by farming their land and fishing. Now, they are employees.

Dozens of women and children pack dirt into bags for palm seedlings along the banks of the Baro River, seedlings whose oil will be exported to India and China. They work for Bangalore- based Karuturi Global Ltd., which is leasing 300,000 hectares (741,000 acres) of local land, an area larger than Luxembourg.

The jobs pay less than the World Bank’s $1.25-per-day poverty threshold, even as the project has the potential to enrich international investors with annual earnings that the company expects to exceed $100 million by 2013.

“My business is the third wave of outsourcing,” Sai Ramakrishna Karuturi, the 44-year-old managing director of Karuturi Global, said at the company’s dusty office in the western town of Gambella. “Everyone is investing in China for manufacturing; everyone is investing in India for services. Everybody needs to invest in Africa for food.”

Companies and governments are buying or leasing African land after cereals prices almost tripled in the three years ended April 2008. Ghana, Madagascar, Mali and Ethiopia alone have approved 1.4 million hectares of land allocations to foreign investors since 2004, according to the International Institute for Environment and Development in London.

Emergent Asset Management Ltd.’s African Agricultural Land Fund opened last year. On Nov. 23, Moscow-based Pharos Financial Advisors Ltd. and Dubai-based Miro Asset Management Ltd. announced the creation of a $350 million private equity fund to invest in agriculture in developing countries.

‘Last Frontier’

“African agricultural land is cheap relative to similar land elsewhere; it is probably the last frontier,” said Paul Christie, marketing director at Emergent Asset Management in London. The hedge fund manager has farm holdings in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

“I am amazed it has taken this long for people to realize the opportunities of investing in African agriculture,” Christie said.

European Parliament to Investigate WHO and “Pandemic” Scandal

In his official statement to the Committee, Wodarg criticized the influence of the pharma industry on scientists and officials of WHO, stating that it has led to the situation where “unnecessarily millions of healthy people are exposed to the risk of poorly tested vaccines,” and that, for a flu strain that is “vastly less harmful” than all previous flu epidemics.

Judge throws out Blackwater manslaughter charges

By Dan Margolies and Jim Wolf WASHINGTON, Dec 31 (Reuters) - A federal judge threw out all charges on Thursday against five Blackwater Worldwide security guards accused of killing 14 Iraqi civilians in 2007, saying the U.S. government had recklessly violated the defendants’ constitutional rights. U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina said prosecutors had wrongly used statements the guards made to State Department investigators under a threat of job loss. The five guards were charged a year ago with 14 counts of manslaughter, 20 counts of attempt to commit manslaughter and one weapons violation count over a Baghdad shooting that outraged Iraqis and strained ties between the two countries.

Goethe?  Or Schiller?

GB, that’s certainly getting 2010 on the Tent off to a great cultural start.

Goethe first thing in the morning is a bit heavy, though.

ode to joy

cannuckgold @ 12:41-   that is a wonderful way to begin the year, thanks for sharing it.

For everyone, especially Israeli, Gold Queen, goldielocks and anyone else who misunderstood the content or intent of an earlier post (more on that at some point, oh joy oh rapture!), Ode to Joy in three parts:

ode-to-joy.jpg

Oh friends, not these sounds!
Rather let us sing more
pleasant ones, and more full of joy.

Joy! Joy!

Joy, beautueous spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium
We enter drunk with fire
Heavenly One, your sanctuary!
Thy magic power reunites,
All that custom has strictly divided
All men become brothers
Where your gentle wing abides.

Thy magic power reunites,
All that custom has strictly divided
All men become brothers
Where your gentle wing abides.

Whoever has been so fortunate,
To be the friend of a friend

He who has obtained a dear wife,
Add his jubilation!
Yes, whoever also one soul
Can call his own in the earthly round!
And who never could, he should steal
Weeping from this fellowship!

Yes, whoever also one soul
Can call his own in the earthly round!
And who never could, he should steal
Weeping from this fellowship!

All beings drink joy
At the breasts of Nature;

All things good, all things evil
Follow her rosy trail.
Kisses gave she us and wine,
A friend, proven even in death;
Ecstasy is granted even to the worm
And the cherub stands before God

Kisses gave she us and wine,
A friend, proven even in death;
Ecstasy is granted even to the worm
And the cherub stands before God
And the cherub stands before God.

Lining Up for the Wall Street Gravy Train

The Treasury’s action is tantamount to another stealth bailout by industry reps working within the Obama administration. All policymaking seems to revolve around two fundamental tenets: Increase the profit potential for the big Wall Street banks, and crimp the flow of credit to the real economy to increase privatization, crush the labor movement, and reduce the population to third world poverty. That’s Neoliberalism in a nutshell and, apparently, Obama’s economic dogma. In fact, as economist L. Randall Wray points out, Obama’s new health care bill is just more of the same; another ginormous handout to Wall Street disguised as public policy. Here’s Wray:

“There is a huge untapped market of some 50 million people who are not paying insurance premiums—and the number grows every year because employers drop coverage and people can’t afford premiums. Solution? Health insurance “reform” that requires everyone to turn over their pay to Wall Street. Can’t afford the premiums? That is OK—Uncle Sam will kick in a few hundred billion to help out the insurers. Of course, do not expect more health care or better health outcomes because that has nothing to do with “reform” … Wall Street’s insurers… see a missed opportunity. They’ll collect the extra premiums and deny the claims. This is just another bailout of the financial system, because the tens of trillions of dollars already committed are not nearly enough.”(Healthcare Diversions Part 3: The Financialization of Health and Everything Else in the Universe” L. Randall Wray)

It’s no wonder that the Obama administration’s appeal to China to “expand its domestic market” focuses exclusively on health care and retirement programs. Wall Street is just lining up for the next gravy train.
