Wishes for a Happy New Year

…for all. Hey, the world is coming apart at the seams, but we can wish and dream, eh?

No hard feelings for Buttercup… Johnny Depp taught me “never trust a pirate”. But they DO succumb to rum…. or Chopin. I still have my FOUR 1999 Ounces of Gold. I know who won.

Chopin all around, for all. (Pirates, too!)

For Samb :-)

The following was adopted as the creed of Optimist International, in 1922.
Original text from the 1912 book, “Your Forces and How to Use Them.” - Christian D. Larson

Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet.
To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

Best Wishes to all for a great year in 2010

It’s hard to believe we are beginning a new decade. It seems only a short while ago that we were reading concerns about Y2K, and about the fragility of our global economic systems. While Y2K didn’t create the glitches that many feared, it was a starting point for us to learn about gold, silver, and self-sufficiency. Much has changed in our lives during the last ten years, and much has changed around the world as well. The US economy and banking system have experienced far more problems post-Y2K than most anyone could have dreamed. Many countries are struggling with unsustainable debt levels, falling housing values, and high unemployment. The knowledge we gained back in 1999 about sound money, and economics in general, turned out to be very useful after all, and I appreciate all the fine articles and commentary posted here on the Gold Tent. I’m still learning new things every day.

The decade ahead will have many challenges, and we’ll probably face hard times in many respects, but I think most of us here have the knowledge and ability to overcome whatever problems we face, and prosper in spite of our difficulties.

Best Wishes to everyone, and may 2010 be a happy and prosperous year for all of us who have been such patient and long-suffering investors.

Oops! Since we did not get the jam job higher that we expected from the Chicago PMI - we are revising it down the day after we released it so we can try again next month

Chicago PMI revised down, Treasury makes final TARP Bank Investments

by CalculatedRisk on 1/01/2010 09:53:00 AM

A couple of stories that I missed yesterday …

Dow Jones reports that the Chicago Institute for Supply Management revised down the Chicago PMI to 58.7 on Thursday from the announced reading of 60.0 on Wednesday. The most significant change was to the employment index that now shows contraction at 47.6 compared to the announced 51.2.

And the WSJ reports that the Treasury announced they made their final TARP investment in a bank: Treasury Ends TARP Bank Investments (ht jb)

The U.S. Treasury this week officially ended the bank recapitalization portion of its Troubled Asset Relief Program. … A Treasury spokesman said [10 small banks] would be the last to receive capital under the effort …

Over My Bitterness Towards Buttercup

So, I want to wish you all a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous, and most of all, Blessed New Year.  I could never adequatley express, via this keyboard, my gratitude for the knowledge and moral support I gather by mostly lurking here.  My thank you to the administrators for allowing me this privilge.

my portfolio up 133% in 2009

My portfolio which is made up 100% with unhedged silver and gold juniors, was however down 59% in 2008. I needed a gain of 144% to break out even. But, hey, I’m not complaining. I am fortunate, I discovered GATA, in late 1999 and bought in when gold was $290 and silver $5 and the hui was 80. My profits are all paper and will only be real when I start cashing out. I think 2010 is going to be a good year for the precious metals. Happy new year and all the best to everyone.

A Decade’s Worth of Returns

From 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2009

claptona @ 9:05 am

Not sure that it means much to the “average” customer as the vast majority don’t have over $250,000 and that amount is still covered.  From reading other things in the last few weeks, the group that appears to be hurt by this are businesses and companies who may have more than $250,000 in an account in order to pay for inventory, payroll or business expenses.

I would vote with my feet but that is just my opinion.  I do like the idea from the Huffingtonpost about everyone moving their money out of the BIG National banks and moving it to a small community bank in order to limit the amount of funds that the BIG banks have to gamble and endanger us with.  Doubt that it will gain much traction but every dollar that they don’t have limits the amount they can leverage.

Happy New Year!

Anyone Know the ramifications of dropping out of FDIC Protection??

It appears JP Morgan and Citibank are dropping out of FDIC protection.
What does it mean to their customers?
Are they doing it to get out of regulations that really show what they are doing?
Is this a trend only for the “To big to fail” banks?
Would be interested in what others think of this move, as i think it is just another attempt by big banks to do whatever they want, and are assured the gooberment will bail them out again if they screw up more.
Thoughts??

Happy New Year!!!

Here’s to a great 2010

Look up Ugly American in the dictionary

and there you will find Karl Denninger.

Talk about stoooopid. Have you ever heard the expression “A billion Chinese can’t be wrong!”, well I think Mr. Denninger for all of his economic acumen is an abject failure on history.

There are billions of people in the world and over half of them view gold as money and I see no signs of that changing, do you?

So, this is for you Mr. Denninger. Here’s teh scoreboard. We bought gold in 2001, along with silver, what did you buy?

Karl Denninger on his forum

Andrew, Gold has almost no intrinsic value. You can’t eat it, f&ck it, or use it for anything other than some dental work and to a small extent in electronics. It is unlike most other commodities (including silver) for that reason - most of its “value” is in adornment (jewelry)

The world will never go back to a gold standard and you wouldn’t like it if the world did. We’d be far more f&cked on a Gold standard than we’ve ever been on fiat currencies, because once you control the gold (and there’s not that much of it all-in) you control the world. The banksters LOVE a gold standard for this reason - they can produce deflationary depressions literally any time they like, stealing all of your property in the process. Because it is such a thin market it is also extraordinarily easy to manipulate and game.

It can be fun to trade, but that’s all I see it as.

As far as “where do you go now?” the answer remains the same - be prepared, get the fuck out of debt and STAY OUT and make preparations for a long, hard rain. If we get lucky we don’t get the “evil and awful” but you’ve lot nothing or little if you make the preps and it doesn’t happen.

*****it’s raining GOLD in Zurich*****

PM Fever re: United Breaks Guitars

Great video. Dave Carroll is a real hit around here. He plays in a band called “Sons of Maxwell” based in Halifax. Coincidently they were supposed to play a New Years Eve Ceilidh in our little town last night but somehow the gig was cancelled at the final hour………and it wasn’t United….its just a 2 hr drive!!
