Have a personal library with the history of the Indian tribes, East and West. Fascinating subject. Visited some the sites.
When the Europeans first came to the to the North East, including Canada, they were revolted by common Indian customs and so called them savages. It was not just scalping…Did you know what the term Mohawk means in native language? It means Flesh Eater. Cannibalism was not limited to the Iroquois but, was common throughout. The fate of captive prisoners was extended torture. After you ran the gauntlet, the real torture began …one by one fingernails pulled and sand rubbed in the wounds. Then fingers cut off, one by one and eaten. Some had their hands and feet cut off, which were also then eaten. Others were chosen for extended torture, hot coal branding and then burned alive. True some were adopted but, very few by %. Torture was not limited to male captives as enemy females were fair game. These practices pre-dated the European arrival. Look at the history of the Erie Indian nation/tribe. The Iroquois wanted their hunting grounds so they exterminated them. The Eries were of the same language and directly blood related.
The Canadian tribes were really no better but, were eventually converted and much of the atrocity ceased. To properly understand the Western Indian situation and resulting slaughter one must begin to understand the origins of revulsion in the East.
This in no way justifies the Native American treatment or reservation conditions. The myth of the Noble Indian was introduced in the 20th centary and glorified by Hollywood. The truth is not quite that simple.
Also, while it is true that the Spanish were particularly brutal, to generally gentle Southern tribes, one may wish to recall what the Aztecs did to their prisoners. In summary, I don’t think that we should color history…rather study it and seek to learn from it, as unbiased as possible.
